Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.

As I write this article, it is the middle of National Volunteer Week and so I wanted to pause from our normal conversations and honor those of you who choose to volunteer your time, talents and treasures to further the mission of 4-H throughout the state of California.

Over 25,000 California 4-H volunteers do the heavy lifting of helping young people reach their full potential as competent, confident, leaders of character who are connected to and contribute to their communities. For many this involves countless hours of mentoring youth, building skills, serving on boards and committees, and planning events and activities. Today I want to remind you that WHAT YOU DO MATTERS!!!  You are helping to shape a generation by giving them the tools they need to thrive and succeed in life.

“Thank you” seems so small in comparison to what you do, but today I want you to know that you are valued, cherished and play an essential role in the 4-H story. One of my favorite movie quotes of all times comes from the movie Gladiator, “What we do in life, echoes in eternity”. When I think of all of you who volunteer in 4-H, I cannot think of a more fitting quote.  Your greatest gift is the lives you are shaping and changing.

Thank you for your service.
